As long as humans have huddled around the fires for warmth, monsters have stalked the darkness. They move in shadows among the human herd, and they reach out and pluck the unsuspecting into their grip. Some humans, however, recognise the truth of what lurks in the darkness and pick up the hunt, the ceaseless vigil. Most often, they hunt with only their cell at their back, but as the 90s came to a close that all started to change. One cell of blue-collar hunters, based in Chicago, started reaching out. By June ‘98, all of Chicago’s hunters were talking. By October ‘99, they’d started finding contacts in stranger groups – men in black, zealous witch-hunters, parapsychic investigators. In March 2000, they launched a message board to pool information. By June, they were all dead.
In the 12 years since Chicago has been abandoned to the forces of the night, but the connections made all those years ago lived on. The remnants of that compact of ‘98, now called the Union, have established a stronghold on the City outskirts. They’re older, wiser and bloodily vindictive, and they’re calling in every contact they’ve made. Across the country the call has gone out to all free operatives: it’s time to take back Chicago.
